Driving Sideways
There's a great song by Aimee Mann called "Driving Sideways", which is a metaphor for being in a relationship that's going the wrong direction. Today, however, I really was driving sideways.
Well, almost.
It was raining something fierce this morning as I was getting ready to leave the house, so I decided to be lazy and instead of walking or riding the bus to the train station, I drove to work. For me that means crossing the bay bridge between SF and Oakland, which normally isn't so bad, because I've got a reverse commute (I'm going to Oakland, while all the other suckers are streaming into San Francisco).
Today, however, the winds on the bridge were the strongest I've ever seen. Rain was literally flying sideways, and it was all I could do to keep my car going forward in a straight line. My car was actually rocking back and forth as I drove. I'm surprised the buses and semis on the bridge didn't blow over. It wouldn't have been the first time.
All the while I was thinking about the song by Aimee Mann, and I kept expecting to see a cow fly past my windshield.
