It feels like I keep repeating myself

It happened again today. I called an 800-number customer support line today and got one of those automated attendants that requires you to press a bunch of keys before you ever get to speak to a human being. After selecting a series of options that was supposedly funneling me in the right direction, I was asked to enter my 16-digit account number, followed by my ZIP code. The idea, or so the soothing computer-generated voice assured me, was to "expedite my call". No sooner did I get in touch with a real live human, than this person asked me: "Could you please give me your 16-digit account number, followed by your ZIP code?" Excuse me??? Why the hell are you making me get carpal tunnel syndrome pressing phone keys while I work my way through your telephone labyrinth if you're just going to ask me for the same information after I get connected? And how is any of this "expediting" anything? Seems more like customer disservice to me.
