Smoking Banned in CA Prisons

A couple weeks ago the ban on smoking in California prisons went into effect. Signed by our 'Governator', it bans all inmates and prison guards from smoking in prison. I think this is just great. It's about time they ban smoking in prisons, because I'm all for healthier, stronger, more vigorous prisoners. It's not enough that we already let them lift weights and turn themselves into more efficient crime machines. We really need to be looking after their stamina and cardiovascular health, too. Thanks to this smoking ban, not only will that paroled mugger be able to strongarm you, he'll have enough energy left to chase you several blocks without wheezing. Hooray! I'm all for cleaner air, and less second-hand smoke, but of all the places to ban smoking, is prison really it? Do we really want our lifers living longer on the taxpayer dime? Plus, what about the withdrawal symptoms? All those smoking fiends who get their cigarette supply cut off are going to be cranky, not to mention the guards who have to deal with these hooligans. What I want to know is what are prisoners going to trade with each other now that cigarettes are no longer standard currency? How are the weak guys going to keep the bullies from pounding their asses? This smoking ban is going to make cigarettes more valuable than gold... or black market crack. Can you imagine what a rock star you'd be if you smuggled this stuff in? Then again, I guess there's always pruno. (shudder)
