Hair-brained Ads
If, in the past, there was ever a chance that I might patronize Lombardi Sports in San Francisco, that chance flew out the window the day I saw their television ad during coverage of the Tour de France.
In the ad, some nut claiming to be an fanatical cyclist shaves off every single hair on his body, because, he claims, every hair adds wind resistance and could potentially slow him down. He goes so far as to shave his chest, head, and even his eyebrows.
The only problem with this ad is the fact that cyclists don't shave their hair because of wind resistance!!! There are a few potential reasons why male cyclists shave their legs, and none of them have to do with aerodynamics. The primary reason is that if you fall off the bike and get scraped up, it's more hygenic if you don't have leg hair which can get into the scrapes and potentially get infected. It's also easier to apply and remove bandages.
Another reason for shaving is that pro cyclists get regular massages on their legs, and smooth legs make for a better, smoother massage. Finally, some guys just shave because it's tradition, or because they like the way the shaved look enhances their muscle tone.
Almost no one shaves their arm hair, and certainly not their eyebrows. Last time I checked, Lance still had a full head of hair, both his eyebrows, and seven Tour victories.
Perhaps Lombardi Sports was just trying to be funny, but they could have done a lot better than make fools of themselves during the biggest cycling event of the year. If they can't figure out something as simple as why cyclists shave, then how am I supposed to trust their other cycling "expertise"?
